Katie Tyrer-Lavelle, Head of Infants

Originally from Didcot, a small town in the UK, Katie’s journey into education began through her early work at a local leisure centre. There, she gained qualifications as a lifeguard and swim teacher, working closely with children through lessons, summer camps, and birthday parties. These early experiences sparked a lifelong interest in child development and learning through play and interaction. 

Driven by a desire to explore the world, Katie spent a year backpacking through New Zealand and Australia. where she gained valuable experience in schools—Katie returned to the UK to complete a Bachelor of Education at the University of Gloucestershire. She also undertook a Special Educational Needs course, developing expertise in supporting children with diverse learning needs. 

Katie began her teaching career at a small Church of England primary school in the village of Stoke Row. Over six years, she taught a variety of mixed-age classes, primarily Years 1 and 2, and served as the school’s Maths Coordinator. During this time, she completed a middle leadership course, equipping her with the skills to lead curriculum development and support colleagues in their teaching practice. 

In 2015, Katie relocated to the Cayman Islands to join Cayman Prep and High School, as a Year 2 Lead and Class Teacher. Her role has included leading the Year 2 team, mentoring trainee teachers through their online degrees, and completing an international Middle Leader Qualification. Katie is known for her collaborative leadership style, her ability to build strong relationships with children, families, and staff, and her commitment to continuous professional growth. 

Katie is passionate about creating a stimulating, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported. She places great emphasis on learning through real-life experiences, often incorporating local Caymanian culture, community visitors, and outdoor learning to make lessons meaningful and memorable. Her energetic and creative approach helps children develop confidence, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. 

Outside of school, Katie enjoys spending quality time with her young daughter Harbour and her fiancé Steve. She loves being outdoors, especially swimming, walking, gardening, and enjoying the beach. At home, she enjoys crafting, cooking, playing games with her family, and relaxing with a good book.
